2025 U.S. Van Tour: Tallahassee Florida & Savanah Georgia
Our 2500-mile eastward journey on Interstate 10 from near
Los Angeles to Jacksonville Florida transitioned on this leg of our trip.
At Jacksonville we took a left turn and started travelling northward toward Chesapeake
Bay. We chose the far southern route to avoid nasty weather, snow, and storm
fronts that lingered in the mid-west. Between Fairhope and Tallahassee,
we did have one day of heavy rain, but it could have been much worse had we
taken either Interstate 40 or 80.
Florida Historic Capital Museum
The stop in Tallahassee was short and decadent. We opted for a Marriott with a gym and eating
leftovers in our room. Despite the rain,
we were pleasantly surprised by the Tallahassee’s rolling hills. Yes!
Hills in Florida! We watched a
movie on Amazon Prime, hit the sack and departed the next morning for Savanah
Georgia. I’m sure the town has much to
offer. We just didn’t have time to explore,
and sadly, Ron DeSantis didn’t respond to my breakfast invitation.
Creekfire RV Resort - Savanah Georgia
Oddly, we arrived in Savanah exactly 3 years after our
previous visit during our Great Loop Adventure.
We treated ourselves to a stay at Creekfire RV Park located 20 miles
short of Savanah. It was very nice and
restful. In Savanah the next day, we
took in some of the attractions that we missed last time. My favorite was the Savanah History Museum
where you will find Forrest Gump’s Bench.
Paramount Studios gave it to the city once filming was finished. We also
walked the old town area and enjoyed the lovely southern ambiance of historic
Savanah.

A River Boat takes Tourists for a ride on the Savanah River
The Harvest Host at which we stayed the second night in town,
Coach’s Corner Sports Bar, was located just a couple of miles from the Marina which
was our home base during our previous visit.
We reminisced about the fine crew of the various boats with whom we
endured high winds, tornados and thunderstorms while tied to the docks at Bahia
Blue Marina. In contrast, the weather
for this visit was perfect.
While in Savanah we overnighted at Coach's Corner
You'll find great Pizza at Coach's Corner Restaurant and Sports Bar
We opted for an early pizza and salad dinner at Coach’s. It was clearly a local hangout. We just didn’t know yet how true that was. As we finished dinner, washed down with gin & tonics in clear plastic cups, we met Don. Don is a retired English teacher and a regular at Coach’s. His wife was out of town so he had all evening. He was nursing a diet coke and didn’t drink anything stronger. He was there to help with Trivia night. That piqued our interest. It was scheduled to start at 7pm. That was 45 minutes away. We returned to the van to prepare it for the evening and then returned to Coach's for a rousing evening of trivia.
Wednesday is Trivia Night at Coach's Corner
As 7pm drew closer, the large parking lot filled with
excited Trivia players. Not wanting to
miss the game, we headed in and found a booth, with Don, next to the caller. In Georgia, Bar Trivia is a team sport. We had 3 on our team. Some tables had 8 or 9 people and we all had
to pick a team name. We were team
Tortuga. No smart phones were allowed and discussion had to be
done quietly with no shouting of answers.
Scoring was mildly complex, so I won’t try to describe. I now know that the figure of the Oscar from
the Academy Awards holds a sword. The
game lasted exactly as long as it took me to finish my double G&T. Don was an engaging conversationalist and
took great pains to offer good advice on the best route from Savanah to
Chesapeake Beach Maryland. My advice is
if you find yourself in Savanah on a Wednesday evening, head to Coach’s Sports
Bar for Trivia night. Oh, by the way, we had leftover pizza for the next
day. I love cold leftover pizza.
