Amy Marie Visits: Lund B.C.

Image
Lund, end of highway 101.  To travel further north you must take a float plane or travel by boat.  It is a small town, in a classic Pacific Northwest cove, that exudes charm.  For years it has been known as the home of Nancy's Bakery.  Nancy has retired.  Many of their items are still wonderful, but the cinnamon buns now are ordinary rather than extraordinary.  It is still extremely popular, and they moved a lot of product while we waited to place our order.  So, yes, it deserves a visit.   Lund is proud of its status as the northern anchor point for Hwy 101.   Multiple signs direct you to this point.  In case you need assistance finding the start/end of Hwy 101. This cairn marks Mile Zero of Hwy 101 A striking carved wood sculpture of orcas is located just above the high tide line. Amy Marie Visits: Powell River

Image
Powell River is a transportation and recreation hub near the northern terminus of Highway 101 in British Columbia.  I felt as I do when I spend time in Truckee or a Colorado mountain town.  People were enjoying the outdoors and nature.  Cars had bike racks loaded with bikes.  Kayaks were loaded on roof racks. Healthy outdoor enthusiasts sporting a variety of headgear, and shoes or boots specific to their sport of choice were walking or sitting at outside eateries nursing a cold beer and nibbling at lunch.  The town has a good vibe. You feel like a slacker if you are caught sitting.  This town is about movement and engagement with Mother Nature!  I loved it. As you drive north from Vancouver, the road is interrupted by two bodies of water.  To cross these requires a ferry ride.  There is also a ferry from Powell River to Texada Island and west to Comox on Vancouver Island.  Scheduled Seaplane and Airline flights also operate from Powell River.  It is a great spot to provision up for tho

Amy Marie Visits: Skookumchuck Rapids and Egmont

The view of Secret Bay from Backeddy Marina in Egmont B.C. Backeddy Marina was our stop both before and after our visit to Princess Louisa Inlet.  It is located near the intersection of Jervis Inlet and Agamemnon Channel.  It is also a convenient stop from which it is easy to access the nearby Skookumchuck Rapids.  Currents are vigorous during certain portions of the tide cycle, so plan accordingly.  We all have a different tolerance for currents while docking.  We chose to arrive near slack water. There is fuel and water available at the marina.  Additionally, there are cabins and yurts available for rent.  The restaurant was particularly good, and the beer was cold!  Upscale dining is available at West Coast Wilderness Lodge just a short walk to the southeast.  Kayak rentals are also available on site.
