2024: Campbell River got us Moving Again!

The team at Ocean Pacific Boatyard did a fabulous job repairing the prop damage we suffered in the Octopus Islands.  We were so fortunate that Campbell River had a first class boatyard and prop shop.  Despite having a full schedule, the yard found time to haul us and pull the prop.  We then went back in the water until the prop was repaired and returned.  We were hauled once again and the prop was re-installed.  We immediately sea-trialed the prop.  Performance was excellent and it is balanced nicely.

Here the yard team is checking the shaft to see if it was bent.  No damage to the shaft, keel or other components was found.

This is the repaired prop ready for installation.  Isn't it beautiful!  I wanted to mount it on my wall as a work of art.  The prop shop gave us one day turn-around! Beth and I walked to the shop and saw it being repaired.  It required grinding, brazing, and profiling.

The final results were excellent!

Amy Marie is ready to go back into the water.

Exploring Campbell River

Campbell River located on the 50th North Parallel halfway up Vancouver Island's east coast.  It is a town of ~ 33,000 people and has a reputation of being the salmon capital of the world.  Every year there is an influx of sport fishermen eager to try their luck.  Salmon season opened while we were in town.  Tourism is a big part of the local economy so the locals were happy to see tourists arriving.

As we were in Campbell River for 6 days, we had time to explore the city.  It pleasantly surprised us.  We had some of the best Croissants we've ever enjoyed at Freya.  Is is in the center of the waterfront downtown area.

This restaurant was a total surprise.  Initially we thought it was an amusing curiosity, Breakfast and Sushi!  Then we looked at their menu, the locals recommended it, and the menu looked good. We stopped for lunch and had a Teriyaki Bento Box, just look at the size of it, and Avocado and Yam Sushi Rolls.  It was all delivered by a robot with a cute cat face.  Best of all, it was delicious!

There were two more restaurants that we would recommend.  For breakfasts, visit Sunny Day Cafe.  Friendly service and a good hearty breakfast.  For lunch or dinner, visit Beach Fire Brewing Company.  Excellent bar food with a flair and delicious cold beer!

One day the temperature started to soar.  It was too hot to work on the boat so we made plans to see a movie.  There is one movie theater in town located to far from the marina to walk, especially uphill on a hot day.  So we took the bus.  Canadians are a friendly bunch,  one of the reasons we love visiting, so we chatted up the bus driver.  He and his wife both drove for the local transit company and he was interested in getting a boat.  They had an RV but wanted to try boating.  The trip passed quickly as we talked non-stop.  Good Fellow!

We never would have spent 6 days in Campbell River if we hadn't needed to get the prop repaired.  Usually we spend 2-3 days and move on.  We were very pleased we were able to dig a bit deeper.  The ladies at the visitor center were very helpful in the beginning.  They were obviously proud of their city and gave up good suggestions.  If you want to experience Canadian Hospitality at its best, visit Campbell River.
