We did a food tour while in Nashville.
This is a great way to get to know a city



Our first stop was at Merchants
A multi story building right on Broadway



Our food tour took us to this breakfast and lunch venue
I even purchased some pastries for the next morning



We tasted various whiskeys at this spot
After the food tour we took a nap as we had a concert that evening



But before the nap, we had to have ice cream.
This spot has great ice cream!
My favorite flavor was Bourbon and Pecan



We ate lunch at the Frothy Monkey courtesy of a good friend

Country Music Hall of Fame



The Country Music Hall of Fame is worth visiting



All sorts of memorabilia is on display 



The Original Grand Ole Opry was the venue for the John Prine Memorial Concert
It is now called Ryman Auditorium and continues as a music venue
Good friends hooked us up with tickets for the concert - Thanks Gary and Anne!



The concert took place over two days
The love of the fans and the performers for John Prine saturated the event

John's favorite food was a White Castle Burger
As the conclusion of the concert, every attendee was offered a burger.
They were great!



We listened to a  group called the Eskimo Boys with our Looper friends, Wes & Leanne
Yes, I purchased their CD!




Our last night in Nashville we reunited with some wonderful Looper Friends 
They all crossed their wakes while we were on the east coast this summer.
It was great to see them as we are 7 travel days from crossing our wake.


There are good ships
There are wood ships
There are ships that sail the seas
but the best ships are the friendships
and may they always be

We also got out to the town of Franklin to see Cristi and her dog Cookie
Cristi was a colleague with whom I worked at Keysight

Berthing

  • We stayed at the Nashville City Dock which give quick access to downtown
    • We made our reservation on Dockwa.
    • The docks have good security, garbage cans and electricity.
    • There are no restrooms, no fuel, no pump out, and no water.
    • It is a great price for such a good location though.
  • Rental Car
    • We rented a Car  from Enterprise at the Hilton which is just across the pedestrian bridge.
    • It is a 10 minute walk from the boat to the Hilton
    • We used the rental car for local sightseeing and shopping

2025 U.S. Van Tour: Alexander Wiper and the Battle of Gettysburg

Alexander Wiper In early June 2025, I toured Gettysburg Pennsylvania and the adjacent Civil War Battlefield.  My Great Grandfather, Alexander Wiper, fought here as a member of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry Regiment.  The purpose of my visit was two fold.  First, I wanted to more completely understand the clash between the Union Army, commanded by General George Meade, and the Confederate Forces, commanded by General Robert E. Lee.  Second, I wanted to learn more about my Great Grandfather's Gettysburg experience. Alexander Wiper had immigrated from Scotland to the United States 5 years prior to joining Company I of the 63rd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, at the age of 16, on August 19th, 1861.   From Civil War Soldier Data Base I don't know what motivated him to enlisted.  Perhaps he needed a  a steady paycheck and he felt being a soldier was a better adventure than being a coal miner.  He did not have a formal education as recorded in the US Censu...

2025 Van Tour of the United States: San Simeon California

San Simeon: California's Alluring Central Coast The beach near San Simeon The next leg of our van odyssey took us to San Simeon and Hearst Castle.  Getting there was more difficult than normal as a landslide, in January 2023, closed Highway 1 between Big Sur and San Simeon forcing us to backtrack from Big Sur to Monterey and then Salinas, to access Highway 101 south to Paso Robles, then west to the coast, and north on Highway 1 to San Simeon State Park.  The slide, which interdicted the coast highway, turned an 80-mile drive into a 180 mile journey.  John Steinbeck Truck & Camper from his book "Travels with Charlie" The detour gave us the opportunity to visit the John Steinbeck Museum in Salinas California.  The Citizens of Salinas are rightfully proud of their native son.  He was a prolific writer who realistically portrayed the struggles, loneliness, social isolation and violence that accompanied the Great Depression.  During World War 2 he served a...
