Great Loop: Enjoy Great Views at Covered Portage Bay

Entrance to Covered Portage Cove

Covered Portage Cove offers excellent wind protection as it is surrounded by hills on three sides and the entrance has a couple of corners which baffle the wind from that direction.  The cove is quite large and depths are such you have many options for anchoring.  You can anchor near shore and stern tie to a rock on shore or you can anchor in the cove itself, with a bow anchor or a bow/stern anchor combination.

We found multiple reasons to stop, linger and enjoy.
  • First, this is a beautiful anchorage.
  • Second, when you hike to the top of the granite bluff on the north side, you are rewarded with spectacular views of the anchorage, the approach to the anchorage, and a view to the west over a section of the north channel.  The trail to the top is located at the head of the cove.  The trail splits shortly after you leave the shore.  Take the right fork to the top.
  • Third, the protection makes this an excellent location to paddle board, kayak or canoe.
This stop has earned its reputation as one of the most attractive anchorages in the North Channel.  You would do well to add it to your travel itinerary.

Note:  If arriving from the east, it is a pleasant trip to travel the inside route through Collins Inlet.  This route offers wind protection and is quite scenic.

Take a hike!  From the top of the granite bluff, you can see the entire cove.  It is a spectacular view for just a modest investment of energy.

The trail to the top begins at the head of the cove on the north-west shore.  It is easy to spot as it comes down to the water's edge.

Boats floating on clear water, their shadow visible on the bottom gives a wonderful tropical touch to the anchorage.

Looking west you will see the North Channel stretching to the horizon

The trail gives access to the top of the bluff below which Amy Marie is at anchor.

During Beth's exploration of the cove, she found a beaver lodge in the shallow north-east lobe of the cove.  She was rewarded with a view of the beaver bringing fresh cut foliage back to it's den.
