Great Loop: Kingston Ontario to Trenton Ontario

Trent Port Marina

Today was a repositioning day.  We were in transit from the terminus of our Rideau Canal adventure to the start of the Trent-Severn Waterway.  Our route was west along the north shore of Lake Ontario.  For a good portion of the 69 miles voyage we enjoyed wind protection from islands.  At other times we travelled in a northerly direction with the 12-15 knot wind at our stern.  In several sections we had to contend with a long wind fetch that allowed the wind waves to build to almost 3 feet.  In those sections, we pushed our speed up to about 13 knots to achieve a smoother ride.

The scenery was green with occasional towns, power plants and homes along the shore.  We travelled a mile or so offshore and enjoyed our day in transit.

The real reward for our day’s effort came in Trenton.  They have a fabulous city marina.  It is relatively new and equipped with internet, a boaters’ lounge, some of the best and cleanest showers of the entire trip, a small chandlery and nearby shopping.  Beth focused on getting provisions for the Trent-Severn portion of our trip.  I picked up a couple of items at the chandlery to replace or repair items on the boat.

If you have time to explore Trenton, there is a movie theater, and a Canadian Air Force Museum in town.  I’m sure a productive day could easily be planned.  As we were excited to begin our journey to Georgian Bay on the Trent-Severn Waterway, we used our time to prepare for this next segment of our trip.
