Great Loop: Cape May, New Jersey

Leaving Chesapeake City headed for Cape May New Jersey

This is a "GO" day!  Weather is great, winds are light.  Time to jet past Delaware Bay.  We departed Chesapeake City at slack water, 6:30am, it was an early start.  The water was nice and flat so we ran easily to Delaware City, turned right and headed down the Delaware River to Delaware Bay.  This body of water has a nasty reputation, so waiting for a weather window is a good idea.  We timed it well and enjoyed a smooth ride down the bay to Cape May.  With our early start, we were near the head of the fleet of Loopers who also wanted a smooth ride south.

You can see in this Nebo screen shot, Loopers were already on the Delaware River as we exited the C&D canal.  the day was looking great and we were happy to see the Bay flat as we looked ahead

The C&D Canal quickly faded astern as we anticipated a good trip down the Bay

Nothing makes a morning better than the sight of calm flat water stretching to the horizon.
Yep, we were a happy crew this morning.

Even our morning coffee tasted better on a day like this.

We quickly caught and passed our friends on "Wild Life"
They also enjoyed the smooth ride down the Bay.
Here we passed the local Nuclear Power Plant.
Perhaps we need more of these.

Even Amy Marie felt frisky.
She was eager to put some miles under her keel.

By passing the Cape May to Lewes Ferry terminal, we entered the Cape May Canal and we’re no longer exposed to the threat of winds and weather on Delaware Bay.

We fueled in Cape May, as the next challenge was to run up the Jersey coast to New York City!

From our anchorage off the Coast Guard Station, we had this view of Ocean Drive Bridge

The sun set on a long day and we anticipated a good day in the morning.
We were both excited to potentially be in New York City by the evening of the next day.
Little did we know what we were in for.

Berthing Information

  • We anchored in the Coast Guard "2" anchorage as designated in Navionics
  • Good holding in 8 feet of water
  • Subject to passing wakes.  Once the sun set, this issue was much reduced
  • We had reasonable protection from winds.  Good protection from swells  and wind waves.
