Great Loop: Solomon Maryland

The fog is lifting as Loopers approach Solomon Maryland

May 15th - 17th, 2022

On May 15th we departed Deltaville Virginia for Solomon Maryland, a 64 mile trip in the fog.  We used radar, AIS (send and receive), VHF radios, and our chart plotters to get us to our destination.  Others were making the same northbound journey on Chesapeake Bay, so we formed a convoy of 6 boats, all headed to a common end point.  In essence we played follow the leader and had many sets of eyes keeping track of other traffic on the bay so we could maintain safe passage for our group.

We did see at least one irresponsible boater travelling at 39 knots in the fog.  He was not responding to radio calls when we asked him if he really needed to be moving at that speed given the conditions.  All other boaters in our vicinity were very cooperative and had the same interest in safely transiting to our destinations.

Just prior to arriving in the Solomon area, the fog lifted and it was wonderful to see tree lined hill on both sides.  It was a great relief to enter the channel and make our way to Spring Cove Marina.  It truly was a refuge from the high intensity day we experienced.  Like any good Looper, we headed to the local Tiki Bar to recap and debrief on the day's passage!

Spring Cove Marina has a free shuttle, which promptly transported us to the local Tiki Bar!

You can see the tension melting away, courtesy of their signature Mai Tai.
Our dinner, on dry land, of bacon wrapped shrimp tasted especially good.

As if the fog bound trip wasn't enough, we also had a lunar eclipse scheduled for our evening entertainment.

The next night we had a thunderstorm cell headed our way.

Fortunately, it missed us.  We did get a good lightning storm and a few raindrops

The day following he storm was beautiful.  The water was like glass in the morning.

The marina owned a perfectly restored VW Van.
We decided to take advantage of the good weather by doing a bike ride.
We needed the exercise and it is a good way to explore the surrounding area.

There are lots of cute houses in Solomon.  Many recently renovated.

We also visited the Calvert Marine Museum.  It was very close to our marina.
We found it to be a great resource for learning more about the history, geology and ecology of Calvert County.

The museum exhibited, not only traditional watercraft, but also a relocated light house.
You can climb up into the light house to see how it operated and where the keepers lived.

The original Fresnel lens is still in place.
It was used to amplify and direct the beam.

There is a walkway around the outside of the light house.

Many traditional watercraft are on display.
They were heavily built for the serious business of fishing, crabbing and oystering.

A reproduction of a Megalodon skeleton is on display.
Many fossilized creatures are found in the cliffs of Calvert County.

Spring Cove Marina was our home base for our Solomon's stay.
It was comfortable and peaceful.
The facility was clean and well kept and the staff was friendly and helpful.

The grounds were well kept.
We had "docktails" at the picnic tables

This is the main office, restroom, shower, laundry and boater's lounge building.

Two day was sufficient to see Solomon.  Note that few restaurants and stores  are open on Monday and Tuesday.  They take those days off after a busy weekend trade.  So you better be prepared to feed yourself on those days!  We did enjoy the town and would return again.
