Great Loop: Chesapeake City Maryland

Two Army Surplus Landing Craft at our

May 30th, 2022

We exited Chesapeake Bay today.  We hated to bid it adieu.  We thoroughly enjoyed our time exploring it's nooks and crannies.  There are so many, it would take a lifetime to explore them all.  We visited the spots we hoped to see. We saw Portsmouth and Norfolk with their shipyards and vibrant waterfronts.  We also enjoyed Deltaville and the Solomons.  Two places that anyone who loves boats has to have on their list.  Next up was St. Michaels, a large dose of colonial, mixed with traditional shipbuilding, and enhanced with good food and beverage with cute BnB's.  This was followed with a week long stay at Chesapeake Beach to visit family and friends.  So great to enjoy each others company.  From there we explored Chestertown and stumbled into a large community event with fireworks and a re-enactment of the Chestertown Tea Party.  The bay definitely put it's best foot forward.  We encountered fog, but never the sloppy, uncomfortable water that gives it a challenging boating reputation.

So those experiences led us to the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal and Chesapeake City.  Docking was very challenging as there was a 3 knot current down the fairway.  I've had more fun...

The deck at Shaefer's Canal House were we had drinks and dinner

Once docked, we had another Looper couple come over and introduce themselves and then they suggested we adjourn to the bar as we surely needed a drink after that docking experience.  How did they know?  Invitation accepted!  They turned out to be the nicest couple.  Potato farmers from Alamosa Colorado.  A cold drink turned into dinner and an evening of fun conversation.  We didn't retire to the boat till almost midnight.  It's true, Loopers are the best people

The second night in Chesapeake City, two Vietnam era LARC transport vehicles pulled into the dock.  The new owners had acquired them in New York and were delivering them to a location in Virginia.  That is quite a voyage in this type of craft.  They are not know for speed underway.  I'm glad I wasn't paying there fuel bill!  A lot of people took interest in the "odd looking" vehicles and they drew quite a crowd.

A restaurant on the C&D Canal bike path where Beth and I had lunch during our ride.

There was also a nice marina in front of the restaurant.

The C&D Canal is the second busiest canal in the United States.  It dramatically cuts transit distance and time between the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays.
