The crew of Amy Marie had the opportunity to visit Camp Choco, a wonderful rehab center for wayward sailors.  The Headmaster, a retired executive and noted Captain, still maintains and hones his nautical skills by sailing the eastern seaboard, with the camps Head Chef, in their vessel, a Camano Troll 31.

When not hosting wayward sailors, the Head Master, a renowned thespian,  can often be found onstage at the  local community theater.  His theatrical resume goes back many years and is populated with many great performances.  Another great actor from this area is Murray Hamilton, known for his performances as the Mayor in Jaws and Mr. Robinson in The Graduate. 

Meanwhile, Camp Choco's Head Chef, patiently perfects pleasingly palatable plates of piquant sustenance in tune with local culinary bounty.

For good behavior,  the Camp Choco staff took us wayward sailors to the historic town of Washington.  It was established in 1776 and is the first town named after George Washington!  A little known piece of trivia is that the river which runs through town has two names,  Above Washington it goes by the name Tar River.  Below Washington it goes by the name, Pamlico River.

Eventually we completed our rehab and were once again turned loose.  We will always have fond memories of our time at Camp Choco.  Who knows, perhaps one of these days we will again be remanded to their custody to enjoy additional Camp Choco Therapy.

2025 U.S. Van Tour: Alexander Wiper and the Battle of Gettysburg

Alexander Wiper In early June 2025, I toured Gettysburg Pennsylvania and the adjacent Civil War Battlefield.  My Great Grandfather, Alexander Wiper, fought here as a member of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry Regiment.  The purpose of my visit was two fold.  First, I wanted to more completely understand the clash between the Union Army, commanded by General George Meade, and the Confederate Forces, commanded by General Robert E. Lee.  Second, I wanted to learn more about my Great Grandfather's Gettysburg experience. Alexander Wiper had immigrated from Scotland to the United States 5 years prior to joining Company I of the 63rd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, at the age of 16, on August 19th, 1861.   From Civil War Soldier Data Base I don't know what motivated him to enlisted.  Perhaps he needed a  a steady paycheck and he felt being a soldier was a better adventure than being a coal miner.  He did not have a formal education as recorded in the US Censu...

2025 Van Tour of the United States: San Simeon California

San Simeon: California's Alluring Central Coast The beach near San Simeon The next leg of our van odyssey took us to San Simeon and Hearst Castle.  Getting there was more difficult than normal as a landslide, in January 2023, closed Highway 1 between Big Sur and San Simeon forcing us to backtrack from Big Sur to Monterey and then Salinas, to access Highway 101 south to Paso Robles, then west to the coast, and north on Highway 1 to San Simeon State Park.  The slide, which interdicted the coast highway, turned an 80-mile drive into a 180 mile journey.  John Steinbeck Truck & Camper from his book "Travels with Charlie" The detour gave us the opportunity to visit the John Steinbeck Museum in Salinas California.  The Citizens of Salinas are rightfully proud of their native son.  He was a prolific writer who realistically portrayed the struggles, loneliness, social isolation and violence that accompanied the Great Depression.  During World War 2 he served a...
