Great Loop: Georgia Barrier Islands

Sunset over Wahoo Island Georgia

April, 2022

The Georgia Barrier Islands become the dominant element of your boating experience as you traverse the coastline north from Florida into South Carolina.  These islands, often know as the “Golden Isles” are short and wide islands separated by deep tidal inlets and sounds.  To seaward, extensive sand shoal systems are present and can provide storm protect to the islands.

Barrier Island

Between the barrier islands and the mainland there are 2 -10 miles of salt marshlands.  These are largely undeveloped.  The vegetation is primarily smooth cordgrass.  Some marshes are bordered by needlerush, spike grass or saltgrass, and glasswort.  Islands within the salt marshes are known as “hammocks”.  The hammocks provide sanctuary for wildlife away from encroaching human development.  There are roosting and nesting areas for Ibises, Herons, and Wood Storks.

Tides, which at 6- 10 feet, are among the largest on the Atlantic seaboard, move nutrients into the marshes and flush them twice a day.  Tidal currents can also be high.

This unique environment has a noticeable soothing effect.  Some transit the area at high speed, hurrying to their next destination.  These people barely pause to enjoy the wonders that surround them.  I feel it is best enjoyed at a slower pace.  One better matched to the natural processes, sights and sounds of the permanent natural residents.

On the downside, are the bugs.  Georgia has biting bugs, primarily no-see-ums that can make any visit to the salt marshes an unpleasant affair.  So, giving some thought to your anti-bug strategy is important.  Tactics can be multi-faceted. Wind over 15 mph can blow them away.  Fine mesh screens on windows can prevent them from entering your boat.  If you have an air conditioner, you can close windows and doors and prevent them from entering the cabin of your boat.  Bug sprays and lotions are also a viable tactic as is dressing in long pants and long sleeve shirts.

We like to mix staying in marinas with anchoring amongst the barrier island and in the extensive waterways of the salt marshes.  This has been made easier with the use of GPS based chartplotter navigation that will simplify the tasks associated with navigating the coastal waterways.  The traditional method of paper charts would suffice but would entail a higher level of attention and work.

Salt Marsh

While the salt marshes are their own reward. The best reward comes when you return to “civilization” refreshed and recharged.  The memories of pleasant visit to Jekyll Island, or a visit to Darien or Brunswick, or Savannah will linger.  The song of the birds at sunrise and sunset as the day begins or night falls can be recalled and replayed when ever you need a calming moment.

As you travel the Atlantic Intra-Coastal Waterway, do take the time to enjoy the special charms of coastal Georgia.  I bet you will find you enjoy being reflective, contemplating the here and now, enjoying the moment and those around you, and moving at a pace more in tune with the surrounding environment.  If you can accomplish that, then I welcome you to – THE LOOPER ZONE!
