Great Loop: Charleston South Carolina
Waterfront: Charleston South Carolina
We split our trip from Hilton Head to Charleston into two days. This allowed us to catch slack water through Elliott Cut. This short passage is known for very strong currents at anything but slack water. We found it pretty sporty still, and we arrived EXACTLY at the time for slack water.
Fellow Looper in Anchored in Church Creek
We overnighted in Church Creek, about 20 miles south of Charleston. A storm moved through overnight with winds gusting to 30 and rain. Holding was good and Amy Marie stayed securely attached to the bottom. Two other Looper boats also sought refuge in Church Creek.

We arrived in Charleston by 10 am. As we were early, we cruised by the majestic antebellum homes in the historic district and then motored out to see Fort Sumter. We tied up in our slip at the Charleston City Marina by 11am, caught the free marina shuttle downtown and have delicious lunch at a French Café near Broad & King downtown. A great way to start our visit to this wonderful city.

Fort Sumter
After lunch we again met up with Carrie and Adam and family. We had last seen them in Hilton Head. It was a treat to see them again before they flew home. We walked the historic district and enjoyed the many wonderful homes and points of interest.
Carrie and her Family
One stop was at the Slave Market. This was the spot where the slave auctions occurred. By the time the Civil War started, there were more slaves than white people in South Carolina. The whites were continuously afraid of a slave uprising. Brutal means were used to "keep the slaves under control". It is so strange that an areas entire economic system could be based upon such a savage system.
Voter Suppression was as active an issue 100 years ago as it is today.
We must continue the fight for democracy and equal rights.
We continued our tour of the city by walking the historic district. Shown below are some of the images we captured of the wonderful homes we encountered. You can see the great pride owners take in caring for these properties.

Note how homes are oriented so the side is presented to the street and the front door is in the middle of the porch. This allows breezes to move through the house more effectively.
We ended our day with a cold adult beverage at a rooftop bar.
