Loopers who just got a ride from the Harbor Host to Walmart

Prior to visiting New Smyrna Beach (NSB) we had been having inverter problems.  The 1500 watt ProMariner unit that came with the boat failed, no AC output.  I ordered a replacement made by VoltMaster on Amazon and when I turned it on it had two fault statements that I could not correct.  So both needed to be returned.  One for a warranty repair and one for a refund.  This required finding a UPS store.  Last time we needed to do this we called the AGLCA Harbor Host in Destin.  So we called NSB's Harbor Host, Rick.  He indicated that the UPS store was too far away to bike to, but he was picking another Loop couple up at the marina to go shopping so offered to pick us up also and take us by the UPS store as well as Walmart.

Boy did this work out well!  We got the inverters shipped off.  We did some grocery shopping, and then the Bonus!  Rick took us for a tour of New Smyrna Beach, including driving ON the BEACH!




What a guy!  So to celebrate our good fortune, Beth and I and our new friends Steve and Cathy took Steve and his wife out to dinner at Riverpark Terrace where we enjoyed one of the best meals of the trip.

2025 U.S. Van Tour: Alexander Wiper and the Battle of Gettysburg

Alexander Wiper In early June 2025, I toured Gettysburg Pennsylvania and the adjacent Civil War Battlefield.  My Great Grandfather, Alexander Wiper, fought here as a member of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry Regiment.  The purpose of my visit was two fold.  First, I wanted to more completely understand the clash between the Union Army, commanded by General George Meade, and the Confederate Forces, commanded by General Robert E. Lee.  Second, I wanted to learn more about my Great Grandfather's Gettysburg experience. Alexander Wiper had immigrated from Scotland to the United States 5 years prior to joining Company I of the 63rd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, at the age of 16, on August 19th, 1861.   From Civil War Soldier Data Base I don't know what motivated him to enlisted.  Perhaps he needed a  a steady paycheck and he felt being a soldier was a better adventure than being a coal miner.  He did not have a formal education as recorded in the US Censu...

2025 Van Tour of the United States: San Simeon California

San Simeon: California's Alluring Central Coast The beach near San Simeon The next leg of our van odyssey took us to San Simeon and Hearst Castle.  Getting there was more difficult than normal as a landslide, in January 2023, closed Highway 1 between Big Sur and San Simeon forcing us to backtrack from Big Sur to Monterey and then Salinas, to access Highway 101 south to Paso Robles, then west to the coast, and north on Highway 1 to San Simeon State Park.  The slide, which interdicted the coast highway, turned an 80-mile drive into a 180 mile journey.  John Steinbeck Truck & Camper from his book "Travels with Charlie" The detour gave us the opportunity to visit the John Steinbeck Museum in Salinas California.  The Citizens of Salinas are rightfully proud of their native son.  He was a prolific writer who realistically portrayed the struggles, loneliness, social isolation and violence that accompanied the Great Depression.  During World War 2 he served a...
